Natural Rubber vs. Synthetic Rubber: What's the Difference?

Natural rubber

Natural rubber comes from the Hevea brasiliensis tree. Latex tapped from the tree is processed into raw rubber. It stands out for elasticity, high mechanical strength and excellent dynamic behaviour — and being biodegradable makes it an environmentally friendly option.

Synthetic rubber

Synthetic rubber consists of polymers produced through petrochemical processes. The most common types include SBR (styrene-butadiene), neoprene and nitrile rubber. Depending on the type, synthetics can outperform natural rubber — chemical and temperature resistance in particular are markedly higher in many synthetic grades.

  • Source: natural rubber is biological in origin; synthetic rubber is derived from petrochemicals.
  • Environmental impact: natural rubber is renewable and biodegradable; petroleum-based synthetics carry a heavier footprint.
